Scoring System

Match Points

Each match awards points based on sets won and lost:

  • Win — Win 2 of the 3 sets
  • Loss — Win fewer than 2 sets

Games

Individual games won and lost across all sets are tracked. Games from the super tiebreaker (Set 3) count as 1 game won or lost.

Bonus Points

Bonus points are awarded for winning sets and for match participation, rewarding both winning and showing up consistently.

How PPI Works

Player Performance Index (PPI)

PPI is the primary ranking metric used to determine flight standings. It measures overall performance as a percentage:

PPI = (Games Won + Bonus) / (Games Played + Matches × 5) × 100

The denominator includes a factor of 5 per match to account for bonus point opportunities. This means PPI reflects both game-level performance and bonus point accumulation.

Why PPI?

PPI rewards players who win games AND play consistently. A player who wins 80% of their games but only plays 3 weeks won't necessarily outrank a player who wins 70% across 10 weeks, because total points accumulate over time.

Standings Tiebreakers

When two or more players have the same PPI, the first tiebreaker is total points. If still tied, total games won is used as the second tiebreaker.

FAQ

What is the MML Rating?

The MML (Monday Men's League) Rating is a player skill rating used to create balanced matchups and assign flights. It is based on each player's USTA rating but adjusted by the Rating Committee based on league performance. Ratings may be updated mid-season if match results indicate a player is significantly over- or under-rated.

How are flights determined?

Flights are assigned by the League Commissioner and the CCJ Director of Tennis based on MML Rating and past league performance. The goal is to have competitive, balanced matches within each flight. Players may be moved between flights between seasons based on performance.

How many players are in each flight?

The league has approximately 60 players split across 5 flights, with about 12 players per flight. Flight sizes may vary slightly depending on total enrollment.

What happens at the end of the season?

The season concludes with the Grand Finale — a king-of-the-court style tournament played within each flight. Flight leaders and award winners are recognized. Awards include the Grinder Award for the player who shows up consistently and competes hard, regardless of win-loss record.

What if it rains or courts are unavailable?

In the event of rain or court unavailability, the League Commissioner or the CCJ Director of Tennis will notify players as early as possible. Cancelled weeks may be rescheduled at their discretion.

Can I play in a different flight?

Flight assignments are set for the season. If you believe your flight placement needs adjustment, contact the League Commissioner or the CCJ Director of Tennis to discuss it for the following season.
